#OstomyRider – Week 1
So here we are, day one of the plan and all is good. Knowing there’s a plan in place (and a blog to write) gives me even more impetus to get on with it – and stick to it.
The wind is howling, the rain is pouring down – welcome to Cornwall – I’m not a fair-weather cyclist but even I draw the line somewhere so I’m off to the gym…
Following the plan I did 25 minutes on the exercise bike, no pushing myself today, trying to pace myself and ease in gently. In all, the gym session lasted an hour, I left feeling positive and although tired, knowing I could have done more, that’s a great way to end a session for me rather than dragging my worn out limbs back home! Note to self, take post exercise food next time, it’s so important to replace that fuel – and lost salts. Oh and don’t forget to take spare bags next time, I always like to change it straight after a shower.

As I’m writing this it has made me consider my bag a bit more, I just realised I never carry a spare bag out with me on a ride, will I start now? I doubt it, if I carry a rucksack there’s always a spare in that but I don’t really think about my stoma or bag whilst I’m riding. I empty before I go out, check the adhesive and that is enough to see me through my ride.
Post ride I refuelled with my own made up smoothie of milk/banana/peanut butter, pretty tasty actually. Biking in the morning is a great way to start my day, and yes I do feel that certain smugness knowing I’ve been out!
Today was a bit of a testing one. As a sideline to having Crohn’s and an ileostomy I have fibromyalgia. This brings other challenges, the pain being the worst. I’m due to go spinning tonight with my training partner Becky and to be honest I hurt, even my clothes hurt touching me. Luckily my stoma is behaving. Mentally the fibromyalgia does get me down whereas having my stoma doesn’t really, and the exercise really helps me in this instance.
Although when you’re in pain the last thing you feel like is exercise but I’m made of sterner stuff and after a lie down for a couple of hours (there, I do listen to my body sometimes!) a couple of painkillers and a good talking to I got changed into my bike stuff whilst listening to some inspiring music. Just putting my bike stuff on helps. It’s been a while since I’ve been spinning, and we tried a different gym, one closer to home, definitely worth it, we’ll be booking for next week! In winter we find it really helps to spin once a week, those cold, wet, dark days and evenings aren’t always conducive to training! I’m so glad I have a training partner in times like these, I know she wouldn’t mind if I cancelled but knowing there’s someone else going does help with the old motivation demon.

During spinning it was tough, ouch my legs but I’m weird and I love the ‘hill’ sections, don’t notice stoma but do check every so often bag isn’t poking through shorts, I do sometimes put a bit of tape around the edges for added security but it doesn’t
Have to make sure I’m full hydrated each time I train and take enough fluid on board during any exercise session, I don’t tend to run much (if I do I wear a support) as my stoma has a tendency to prolapse but that was a tough session though! Post spinning (7pm) I had dinner. Will see how legs feel tomorrow, they’re done!
Also, my mood was lifted, the pain had subsided and I felt glad I’d made that effort.
Week one complete. Yay go me!
